Toy Mass Success

The Group would like  to thanks all the scouts, parents, leaders other groups in our County that participated in the Annual Toy Mass held in Ballinlough Church on 5th December.  The final tally was 30 full bags of toys collected and these have now been distributed to charities and individuals within our own Scout County.  This event remains one of the more practical ways that we demonstrate keeping our scout promise by “helping other people”

We are seeking additional parents to come on board this year and are seeking a parent to act as Chairman of the Committee as the Group will celebrate its 50th anniversary in August 2013 and a programme of events will need to be planned this year.

Visit to Lord Mayor

The Group visited the Lord Mayor, Cllr Terry Shannon in the City Hall on 16th May.  After a reception in the Council Chamber the Lord Mayor described his time in scouts and the friend he made.  The Group made some presentattions, of a 38th Cork neckerchief, Scout Whistle, Scout Penknife, and Flowers for the Lady Mayoress.  The Lord Mayor was quizzed on some merit badges and was awarded a special framed Public Speaking & Civics Merit Badges.  He then invited all the scout to see his office and the board room and took time to chat with all the scouts.

ONE Programme

The Group completed it’s training day on Sunday 10th April and can now proceed to the new ONE programme developed by Scouting Ireland.  The new programme is based around much more youth involvement in the planning, delivery and review of the activities we do.  It is very much based on personal progression of scouts and the new badges support special interest and focus on some traditional scouting Adventure Skills such as Camping, Pioneering, Hillwalking, Backwoods, Emergencies and well as a range of Water and Air based skills.

The programme is supported by new programme materials and each youth member will be given a new handbook in the next few weeks.  This explains about the programme and is interesting for both parents and scouts to read.

Many thanks to Ian, Pat & Kieran (training team) and to Simon for organising the event.

ONE Programme Training Day

The time has arrived for the Changeover Training to the new ONE programme.  All Group Council members, Leaders, Venturers, Scouts and the Rí’s and Aire from the Cub/Macaoimh sections will attend the training day, which will be held on Sunday 10th April in the Community Centre commencing at 9.30am until approximately 4.30pm.

Improvements to Outdoor Facilities

The works in the area directly behind the Scout Hall have now been completed. The works involved the removal of existing scrub and hedging which was overgrown. The trees were left in place and the space was tidied up by creating a bank with railways sleepers. Bamboo shielding was added to the fencing between this space and the apartment complex next door. An all weather (astro turf) surface was laid installed in the area between the Scout Hall and the Youth Centre Extension. The existing small floodlight were replaced with 4 large energy efficient fittings. The remaining grassed area has been retained for tent pitching and pioneering.

Annual Toy Mass Postponed

Due to the poor weather conditions and expected icy roads, the Annual Toy Mass scheduled for Wednesday 1st December in Passage West has been postponed.  The event will now take place on Wednesday 8th December instead.
