ONE Programme

The Group completed it’s training day on Sunday 10th April and can now proceed to the new ONE programme developed by Scouting Ireland.  The new programme is based around much more youth involvement in the planning, delivery and review of the activities we do.  It is very much based on personal progression of scouts and the new badges support special interest and focus on some traditional scouting Adventure Skills such as Camping, Pioneering, Hillwalking, Backwoods, Emergencies and well as a range of Water and Air based skills.

The programme is supported by new programme materials and each youth member will be given a new handbook in the next few weeks.  This explains about the programme and is interesting for both parents and scouts to read.

Many thanks to Ian, Pat & Kieran (training team) and to Simon for organising the event.

ONE Programme Training Day

The time has arrived for the Changeover Training to the new ONE programme.  All Group Council members, Leaders, Venturers, Scouts and the Rí’s and Aire from the Cub/Macaoimh sections will attend the training day, which will be held on Sunday 10th April in the Community Centre commencing at 9.30am until approximately 4.30pm.

Improvements to Outdoor Facilities

The works in the area directly behind the Scout Hall have now been completed. The works involved the removal of existing scrub and hedging which was overgrown. The trees were left in place and the space was tidied up by creating a bank with railways sleepers. Bamboo shielding was added to the fencing between this space and the apartment complex next door. An all weather (astro turf) surface was laid installed in the area between the Scout Hall and the Youth Centre Extension. The existing small floodlight were replaced with 4 large energy efficient fittings. The remaining grassed area has been retained for tent pitching and pioneering.

Cycle Hike

Our cycle hike is taking place on Sunday 13th March from 10am.  Cubs should wear their neckerchief and a cycling helmet and bring a light snack in a back pack.  We will be leaving from the Scout Hall.  Hat and gloves are advisable.

Cooking Night – Mmmm

Our cooking night went really well again this year. The previous week we collected suggestions and voted on the items to be cooked. The results was a Hot Chicken Wrap for the Main Course and Chocolate Marshmallow “Kebabs”. We had loads of help this year, whihc helped us to cook and eat our way through our menu on time! Picture to follow shortly

Night Hike

Our mysterynight hike on a spy theme, started in town at Penrose Wharf and continued to Kent Railway station where our “spies” met an agent who told them to board the train to Cobh.  While on the train the spies has a message to decode, which told them to disembark at Carrigaloe instead of Cobh.  At Carrigaloe station another agent gave a compass  bearing for our spies to follow, which brought them to the cross river ferry, where they had to wait for a signal.  A Morse code message was flashed across the  river which old spies then has to decode the message.  After boarding the ferry, they met another agent in Glenbrook.  After decoding this message it told them to hiketo Monsktown Pier on foot to disarm a bomb.  At the Pier a final agent gave them a grid which helped them figure out the abort code for the bomb from the clues they gathered during the night.  All clanns managed to decode the bomb on time.
